Simon Lichtiger - Physician and Educator in Medicine and Humanities

Simon Lichtiger is a physician and academic whose work in gastroenterology has had a lasting impact on the understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Over the course of his career, Simon Lichtiger has established himself as a leading authority in gastroenterology, particularly in the management of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Dr. Lichtiger began his long-standing association with Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1985, where he served as an attending gastroenterologist and associate clinical professor of medicine for nearly three decades. During this time, he became involved in both patient care and academic instruction, teaching medical students, residents, and fellows.

In 2014, Dr. Lichtiger joined Columbia University Medical Center as professor of gastroenterology and director of the inflammatory bowel disease division. In this leadership role, he oversaw patient care, guided research initiatives, and mentored trainees across multiple levels of medical education.

He currently teaches genocide, the Holocaust, and major catastrophes in history at Ateres High School. This role reflects his commitment to education and the transmission of knowledge across various disciplines.
